Maths 'Fractions'In Room 9a we having been learning about Fractions for Mathematics. We cut up pieces of fruit and vegetables into halves, quarters and thirds. Then we talked about using half, quarter and thirds in real life.We thought a cooking activity would be a good way to use them so we played the pizza game and borrowed Mrs Dijkstra's fruit and cake to cut up.Then we made play-dough in groups using a recipe that used half and quarter measurement cups.Next we took a plastic knife to cut up our play-dough snakes into half, quarter and thirds. We had lots of fun in maths this week.

Happy 6th Birthday Olivia

Welcome back to Term 3.
This term we are learning about 'The Olympics'.
We had a brainstorm about what we already know about 'The Olympics'.
We had a look at some of the sports that will be at the Olympics.
We are going to keep a tally chart as part of our Maths programme to record the medals New Zealand, Australia, China and America win at the Rio Olympics this year.
This afternoon we made Olympic Torches after being inspired by the middle school at their
Olympic relay yesterday.

Toys, Toys, Toys.

Last week we brought Toys to school to use in our Learning.
On Tuesday we brought 'Soft Toys' to school and used them in Maths.
We ordered them from smallest to biggest. We counted them. We grouped them in sizes, shapes and colours.
Roman had the biggest Toy and Alice had the smallest.
It was lots of fun.

We also wrote stories about our toys and read stories to them at reading time. We took them to the Library and played with them all day.

Toys, Toys, Toys.

We are learning about Toys.
We enjoyed a fantastic trip to Motat last week and this got us inspired to make our own soft toys.
Fist we looked at pictures of soft toys and brought soft toys to school.
Then we drew a plan of what we wanted our soft toy to look like, onto paper.
Mrs Newman then cut a template out of calico.
Then we coloured the template in and added the details using fabric pens. This was quite tricky as the material kept moving.
Next lovely Charlotte's Nana took the templates home and sewed the two pieces together as Mrs Newman's sewing machine had broken.
Today we stuffed the toys with stuffing and Charlotte's Nana came to school with her sewing machine to sew the last part up.
They look amazing Room 9a. You are all so clever.
A big thank you to Charlotte's Nana, she is a star.

Working together

Drake, Matt and Peter worked really hard together today to make a candy shop at the collage/construction table.
They worked together to collaborate, incorporate everyone's ideas and to turn take to produce this wonderful sweet shop.
Isn't it awesome?
